Episode 38: Celebrating World Kindness Day with Brian

Welcome to Tea, Toast and Trivia.

Thank you for listening in.

November 13th  is World Kindness Day.

Please join my brother, Brian, and me as we discuss the question: What is kindness?

So put the kettle on and join in the conversation.  Stop by TeaToastTrivia.com and share your insights. We would love to hear from you. I am your host Rebecca Budd and I’m looking forward to sharing this moment with you.

Thank you for joining Brian and me on Tea Toast & Trivia.  And thank you Brian for sharing your thoughts on short notice.  I always enjoy our conversations. For more information on World Kindness Day, check out the link The World Kindness Movement.org

One last thought comes from Henry James:

“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”

Safe travels, wherever your adventures take you!

What I gather from your conversation is that niceness can more often be superficial and sometimes taken for weakness, as in the pushover scenario. Kindness on the other hand involves empathy and seeing others as deserving the kindness you’d wish for yourself. Thank you for making these distinctions. And as you both say, simply listening is a wonderful form of kindness. It can sustain families and communities alike. Hugs!!

Kindness is a marvelous word that embraces so many other words that are embedded within the definition: compassion, forgiveness, mercy, grace, empathy. I agree with you wholeheartedly – simply listening can sustain families and communities alike. I like how Brian says that his life is a process of becoming, of learning and gaining more insight into who we are in connection with others. And kindness for yourself – in many ways I find that this is the most difficult undertaking. My life is a process of becoming and that has given me permission to enjoy the journey. Your thoughtful comments are so very much appreciated. Hugs coming back to you swiftly.

      1. There are days when I think, all I want in life is to be kind. That’s all.

    2. I also was immediately struck by the distinction between niceness and kindness. It was very effective way to start the podcast!

Thank you to you and Brian. You two are a fantastic team, and I will be looking forward to more from the two of you. Kindness is wonderful, sweet and kind, they say. Kindness has depth, more that than the sweet “hello” and smile, although that is a part, but heartfelt contributions sometimes can change the whole life of one who is sad and needy.

I agree – Kindness has depth. We know it when we experience the feeling. I agree that hello and a smile, especially in a meaningful exchange is transformational. What I do know for certain is that kindness to others is kindness to ourselves. Many hugs!

I was fascinated by this conversation – I don’t think I have ever truly considered the definitions of, and differences between, ‘nice’ and ‘kind’. I can see how ‘nice’ is about being pleasant and agreeable, whereas being ‘kind’ is much more about actively being considerate and generous towards another person – so much more depth and value. Thank you Becky and Brian for another wise and thought-provoking post. Already looking forward to the next one. As Frances says, you make a great team! And thank you for reminding me of one of my favourite quotes – “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” – HH The Dalia Lama 😀💕

Oh that is a wonderful quote to begin my day. I will share your thoughts with Brian – I know they will resonate with him. He is our family philosopher which goes along with his creative endeavours. He is also our family comedian, which allows us to see humour in difficult situations. Ah, now that is another podcast.! Hugs coming to you over the pond! Isn’t it interesting how quickly time travels through WIFI!

  5. World Kindness Day. Now, that’s something I can get behind! (Unlike National Doughnut Day and other such nonsense.)
